The Remarkable Transformation of the James Scott Mansion

The James Scott Mansion was built in 1887 by James Scott. When he died in 1919, the building was covered in appartments. The In 1975 the building caught fire and fell into disrepair. Because there was no money for the restauration of the building and no private investors where interested in buying the building, Detroit put the building on the demolishing list. However in the early 2000’s the building was bought from the city by local developer Joel Landy who couldn’t believe the city wanted to demolish this beautiful building. He wanted to do what others thought was impossible.

The renovation of the Mansion started in 2016 and was finished only 2 years later in 2018. The renovation had a price tag of 6 million dollars. Now, there are 26 one- and two- bedroom apartments which vary from $1,275/mo. to $1,530/mo and the apartment size varies from 430 to 730 square feet.

The project was funded by Landy, community development lender Capital Impact Partners, historic tax credits, brownfield credits, and Invest Detroit. The apartments are all rented out right now, which means an influx of middle class in the neihborhood. The James Scott Mansion finally has been restored to glory and now again, it adds the beautiful aesthetic to the neighborhood as it once did
