c.1887 Newsom Brothers Pinney House in Sierra Madre

The historic Pinney House is located in Sierra Madre, California. This unique 3-story, 10,000 sq ft Victorian Queen Anne-style structure was commissioned as a 30-room hotel by former Civil War surgeon Dr. Elbert Pinney to accommodate East Coasters arriving in droves to buy up property during the Los Angeles land boom of 1885-1888. It was designed and built (1887-88) by renowned architects Samuel and Joseph Cather Newsom, who worked mostly in the San Francisco area. They were well known for their flamboyant and lavish designs. Over the years, the house went on to serve multifaceted purposes with various owners. It was known as a sanatorium, boarding house, ballroom dance studio, apartment complex, and on occasion, a classic Hollywood film set. The house is currently a private residence and the current owners, Greg and Judy Asbury have spent the past decade lovingly renovating the former 30-room hotel.
