225 Hamilton St, Evanston, IL 60202

SOLD

This remarkable historic home for sale in Evanston has an interesting history: its original owner, Elliott Anthony, worked in the same court rooms as Abraham Lincoln, even escorting the slain president’s funeral cortege back to Illinois in 1865. Designed by architects Pond and Pond in 1894, Anthony’s Queen Anne-style house is on the market for the first time in 20 years with an asking price of $2.1 million. The 5416 sq ft single-family residence’s historic interior remains pretty much intact. No HGTV-inspired open floor plan here. None of the woodwork was ever painted. Besides the paneling and built-ins and what looks like an original butler’s pantry off the kitchen, there is also a two-story fireproof library that was created due to Anthony’s experience surviving the Great Chicago Fire of 1871. He lost his book collection, which numbered in the thousands, and was determined it never happen again. The room can be shut off by iron doors from the rest of the building in case of a fire. The guy loved books so much, Anthony was one of the founding members of the Chicago Public Library.
